In a US hospital, they will never do s.th against patient's wishes. If you tell them that you're giving up treatment and would like to go home, they'll be happy to send you home at whatever time you request.

You cannot predict what's going to happen when he is in the hospital. However, you can be sure that your father-in-law will receive better care than he would in China. If the doctors know that he has end-stage cancer and you only request comfort care, they'll make him very comfortable and in less pain. Depending on where you live, the hospital may have nursing staff who speaks Chinese, or you and your husband can help them communicate with the doctors and nurses. I think he'll like there better.

If something happens in the hospital, it's better than happens in the airplane where you have very limited space and resource, and no one can help you much.

When you take your FIL to the hospital, let them know that your plan, that you want him to make it to China, the physician can give him some treatment to improve his condition and get him ready for the trip. No matter what they do, they're the professionals and know how to buy more time with medicine or other procedures, it's better than just wait at home and wondering what's going to happen. Take him to the hospital and let him get the care he needs. Don't worry about money, US hospital won't turn a sick patient away because of money. Register under your dad's name, let them do whatever is necessary, the hospital will eat up the bill since he doesn't have anything.

Good luck and best wishes!
