Thanks for your time to respond my post!
I can see my many weaknesses from the responses, and that’s why I posted my issues to seek for advice. Thanks a lot for your time!
1) First thing I want to say that I am not so-called experienced pro in the US business world yet. I still need to learn how to make tough decisions to pursue career opportunities. Hereafter is my background.
Professional exp.:
5 yrs in China investment evaluation and mgmt consulting; came to US in 2002 to pursue MBA, got MBA in 2004, joined my company in 2004. I am now working in headquarters’ 2-yr rotational program to get exposure in different markets and functions. Current role is more like a business consultant, and I do not have managerial experiences in US so far. So in terms of US working experiences, I have 2 years and only get exposure from one company.
Job search exp:
I am about to graduate from this program, and starts to look for jobs within the company. When I got my offer from my company (first job in US), I accepted it without any negotiation. It was partially because I like the career potential of the program and partially because job market was tough back then and there weren’t many options to choose. And this time will be my first time to consider which job to take and how to negotiate. So please bear with me for my questions.
2) Timing of negotiation.
I have got oral offers, but have not received written offers. I plan to negotiate after receiving the written documents. Prior to that, I posted my issues, and seek for advice about how to pursue the opportunities. I am not saying that I am strong in negotiation and confrontation, and still need to work on that. But it is not that I am too frightened to negotiate it at all.
3) Career opportunities vs. salary/title
Ideally, people follow their passion to climb the career ladder. However, I find it difficult to choose when a) I don’t have any prior industry experiences in my company’s field, 2-yr so far; 2) company is so large that there are so many markets/functions, and variety of ways to succeed, 3) during my 2-yr rotation, I worked in one department for at most 9 months for each rotation, and then moved on. So I don’t have the chance of experiencing every job long enough to foresee the career potential in next 10-15 years.
I think that I will eventually know where my passion goes. However, I am now struggling with which opportunity to choose. That’s the truth.
The 3 offers I got are from different business groups, and every one is a good opportunity. It offends some friends here when I say that I am not happy about the salary and title. It is primarily because the title and salary are very close to what I have now. I have worked extremely hard on my every rotation, and received “excellent” performance review for every single one. I got top percentile bonus and salary increase as well. I am upset because these offers (as my permanent job) are very close to my current package after my 2-year hard work and excellent performance. I will raise this question to my boss, but please understand why I am not extremely pleased with those offers. I like money, but won’t be the solo money seeker when making career decisions.
4) Offer situation
I did not get my dream job because I need more industry experiences and seasoning, which I agree. I applied to the junior mgr. position, but my company now does not intent to implement the junior mgr role. That’s why I did not get it. I am disappointed, and know that I need something more to handle the job.
Honestly, I still like to pursue this opportunity, but the Sr. analyst position does not offer great managerial exposure which I need the most and attractive salary package as well.
5) My questions:
How could I leverage current situation to either a) get a better package; b) If I go with the analyst role, how could I get a “promise” to be promoted to my dream job?
